Doumar’s began and continues to be a thriving family business, and it’s not uncommon to meet a member of the Doumar family behind the counter. But, regardless of whether or not they’re related to Abe Doumar, every member of the Doumar’s staff is considered to be part of the family. In fact, we think that’s one of the reasons that many of the members of our staff stay on for decades. Read on to find out more about the great people that continue to make Dou’s a Hampton Roads classic.
Thad Doumar, a 3rd generation member of the restaurant family, has been baking ice cream cones and working behind the counter at Doumar’s since he was a pre-teen. He joined the family business full time in 1987 and considers himself lucky to have been able to work with his dad Albert for over 28 years. If you were to ask Thad what menu items were his favorites, he would say a meal that includes a limeade, french fries, and a barbecue sandwich, followed by a a vanilla ice cream cone of course, is his top choice!
Randy Windley, Albert’s son-in-law, has been a part of the Doumar’s tradition since 1991. Randy was the perfect addition to the Doumar family both on a personal and a professional level. Though Randy is an amauteur with only 25 years of cone baking experience, some would say that his cones are some of the best around. Randy’s favorite menu items include the Taylor Pork Roll sandwich and a Big Daddy ice cream cone with butter pecan and chocolate ice cream.
Kathy Doumar Windley learned how to bake ice cream cones at age 11. Cone baking and working behind the counter is a right of passage for any Doumar. Her dad Albert would be thrilled to know that she has finally joined the business full time in June of 2017. Kathy claims her favorite menu items include the amazing BLT and the Ringo sundae that includes cones chips and hot fudge. She is quick to add that Egg Nog Shake season is her absolute favorite time of the year!
